What home decor actually is
Once the furniture is in, a room still needs its decorative layer: lighting you can dim, a rug that anchors the seating, cushions and throws, plants, vases, candles, a mirror, a few objects on a shelf, something on the walls. Get this layer right and even simple furniture looks considered. Get it wrong and an expensive sofa looks unfinished.
Living room decor
Three things do most of the work: a rug large enough for the front legs of every seat to sit on it, at least three light sources at different heights, and one plant that is genuinely large. After that, a coffee table tray with a bowl and a candle, two or three cushions in textures rather than prints, and a single large piece of wall art.
Bedroom decor
Bedside lamps rather than a ceiling light, layered bedding in linen and wool, a rug that runs under the bed and out either side, a plant or a branch in a tall vase, and a calm piece of art above the headboard. Keep surfaces almost empty; a bedroom is decorated by what you leave out.
Entryway, shelf and table decor
An entryway needs a mirror, a surface for keys and one light. Shelves look best styled in loose groups of three, mixing books, one object and one plant per shelf, with gaps left on purpose. A dining table wants a low centrepiece, a bowl, a vase or a cluster of candles, that you can still see over.
Seasonal and occasional decor
